Oasis Reviews

I must say, I wasn't expecting [Spoiler] at the end. Anyway, I found your novel through forum.blogfiction.org/, and managed to read through the entire thing in one evening.

It's very well written, and I don't usually read long stories online unless the first few hundred words grab me, which yours did with ease. Even stranger is the fact that I'm no fan of zombie stories, but I just couldn't stop reading. Something about Corbin's character made me want to see him survive to the end.

In his online story-writing debut, author Bryce Beattie unleashes a roller-coaster-ride-of-a-tale in the zombie thriller, Oasis. Set in a deceptively sleepy desert town, Oasis grips the reader, in a claw-like, undead grasp from the very first page, and continues to propel them into a plot full of unexpected twists, turns and chomping zombies. At every turn the hero, Corbin St. Laurent, faces complicated scenarios that involve not only blowing the heads off of undead hordes, but also navigating through the intricacies, and impossibilities, of human nature in panic mode. From seductive women to slime-bag attorneys, Corbin is faces with an array of challenges that require near super-human strength to overcome.

After being beat down, plotted against, set up and thrown out of just about every human enclave left in Oasis, Corbin is resigned to using his native wit to work to save everyone who hasn't been bitten by virus-controlled zombies. As the military moves to wipe Oasis off of the map, will Corbin be able to discover the secret to saving his little town, or will everyone be blown to bits in an attempt to cover up a nasty government secret? Oasis is a quick read because your eyes have to move fast to keep up with all the action! I highly recommend this edge-of-your-seat page-turner.

Corbin St. Laurent is a normal, everyday guy, just trying to get along.

He's an overworked nurse in a small, desert town, facing all the typical problems workaday people face: an unforgiving and merciless boss, a heart of gold which longs to help his fellow man, and too little sleep. But all that changes for Corbin one night after getting off work and discovering a Red Cross flu shot trailer set up in the parking lot of the grocery store next door.

At least, that's what it looked like. Corbin finds out, along with the rest of Oasis, in short order that this is NOT business as usual. Now, a deadly virus is running amok in Oasis, destroying all humanity in its path and spreading itself with perfect, horrifying efficiency -- by making its hosts walking carriers targeting the uninfected with the express intent of proliferating.

Follow Corbin through the now-dangerous streets of Oasis, as he has to evade the virus, finding refuge through long, sleepless nights, fighting exhaustion, heat stroke, treachery and betrayal. He has no one to count on and only his wits to see him through. He's desperate to find the cure before the military takes matters out of his hands -- IF he can stay alive long enough.

Oasis is a great homage to the heroes of pulp fiction, influenced in its punchy, direct style by such names as Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Kenneth Robertson. The clipped, pointed sentences each accentuate the action-packed, heart-racing story and style, and Bryce Beattie has definitely hit a home-run ball in the genre of horror pulp fiction. A worthy read!
